Evan T. Pritchard has created a poetic work that honors the timeless world of the Algonquin people. A descendant of the Algonquins explores a rapidly disappearing world in which there is no word for time and life moves with the rhythms of nature —the world of the Algonquin Indians. One of the largest and most diverse language groups in the world, the nations and tribes which are related under the title “Algonquin” once occupied most of the northeastern United States, from the Mississippi River to the Atlantic Ocean, and great portions of southern Canada. Their influence on the culture and history of North America has been immense.
No Word for Time The Way of the Algonquin People eBook Evan Pritchard
In my pursuit of how to live in a way that brings us back into being one with the Earth, this series of stories offers many insights into this way of life, stories that come from Evan Pritchard’s search of his own Micmac heritage. We have placed ourselves above or superior to all other life upon the Earth, and in doing so, in our greed for control and power, we have destroyed much of what we and the other living beings of the Earth depend upon for survival. The stories of No Word for Time bring us back to living in harmony with all that is of the Earth, stories of his vision quest, of asking and listening to the spirits, and of the Micmac rituals, songs and ways of speaking, stories that show us how we need to live to bring us back into communion with the Earth. Though Evan’s story of his vision quest was a powerful learning experience, each story he tells is another vision quest. This book is an important book for each of us to learn how to survive with the impending demise of our survival and of all life upon the Earth.Product details

No Word for Time The Way of the Algonquin People eBook Evan Pritchard Reviews
I try to keep this book ( I have a previous edition) always where I can find it because sometimes I need it. If you find yourself on this reading journey, and actually read the whole book (how can I accurately criticize a book I haven't completely read?), at some point you may realize that this Indigenous author is not only a scholar who seeks knowledge, but a wonderful writer who shares wonderful and meaningful stories. His respect for language (foreign or Native) and the wisdom it contains becomes quickly apparent, as he passes that respect and wisdom onto us who walk the turning pages. I think, How difficult and courageous to take on such a task, to walk such a journey, but through his passion, respect, and love for what he has learned from his experiences, the book ignites sparks in me to think, to reflect, and to perceive. It is a contemporary Native journey the author shares openly, honestly, and with heart, and upon occasion, with humor. He put it down and shared it as he lives it with a world that desperately needs Indigenous perspectives, and not only of Natural and man-made time, but of the older and proven ways of seeing and living and "being" on our Mother, the Earth, which makes No Word for Time one of my treasured books.
I just adore this book. Poetic, beautiful and insightful.
Good reading if you are studying native languages and desire a good base for concepts. Storyline is easy to follow.
I can't say enough about the content, and writing, of this book. The Algonquin ways are those that we as a people should have followed...not the other way around! The writing was so fluid, and meaningful, with all the beauty that was intended.
a wonderful read, a book that is informative and inspirational and inspires meditation and reflection. Should be required reading for every student.
Evan T. Pritchard is of Micmac heritage, and he felt a passionate need to learn the ways of his ancestors. Which is why he went and found himself a Native Micmac teacher. This book is an attempt to explain to the rest of us some of what he learned, with special emphasis on the spiritual. I think it is particularly successful at helping us begin to grasp the traditional Native worldview.
This book is not written linearly, like a novel. It touches on a subject, circles around it for a while, and then comes back to address the same subject again in more depth. Micmac prayers move in this manner, circularly. And the rhythms of the earth and of traditional Native life are similary cyclical, moving around a center rather than progressing linearly like our concept of time from the past to an isolated future.
In response to a previous reviewer Lack of linear time does not equal "primitive". On the contrary, I believe the author is actually trying to show us how much more *sophisticated* the Micmac view of life is than ours. If their sophistication is linguistic, spiritual, and philosophical rather than technological, then in my mind that makes it just that much more important.
This book seeks to immerse us in the worldview of a people whose wisdom we have long ignored, but that we now very much need. And it succeeds in this far better than any other book I have read. Rather than simply teaching us intellectually about the Micmac approach to life and spirituality, it helps us feel what it is like to see the world through Micmac eyes.
I highly recommend this book.
Very good book, a most interesting subject. I haven't finished yet, but it's well written, educational and entertaining.
